A Collection of Memories - Tender Fire Books

A Collection of Memories

John Yoniak is an avid collector of everything sports. His passion for sports started nearly fifty years ago.
Much like any suburban child growing up in America, he played little league baseball, football in the back-yard and street hockey.
One afternoon John’s older brother and a few friends decided to venture into Manhattan to the Roosevelt Hotel to try and obtain signatures from players of the New York Mets who were staying there. Eight-year-old John tagged along.
John got his first signatures, including from Joe Toree, Sandy Alomar, Wood Woodward, Rico Carty and Hank Aaron… He was hooked.
The experience launched him into, well some would say, an obsession for sports memorabilia. Many say John has become a magnet for “bumping into” and befriending some of the greats of the sports world.
John’s collection of signatures and memorabilia is extensive… In A Collection of Memories, John shares not only some of the photos, signatures and memorabilia, but also his memories of the players, games and friendships he collected along the way.

The Miles and Trails of a Marathon Godde

The Miles and Trials Of A Marathon Goddess and WE GOT THIS! The Story of the Marathon Goddess.

Julie Weiss, a/k/a The Marathon Goddess, of Santa Monica, CA., ran 52 marathons in 52 weeks in 2013. In the process, she has raised over $500,000 in the fight against pancreatic cancer through her website:
Marathongoddess.com
Following the death of her father, her biggest fan, from pancreatic cancer, Julie was determined to make a difference. Running marathons gave her the answer. She decided to turn her passion into a purpose and embarked on an almost unprecedented endeavor to raise hope, money and awareness for pancreatic cancer, the third leading cause of cancer death in the United States, and also the lowest funded for research.
Julie has been featured on major media outlets such as CNN, NBC’s TODAY, the Los Angeles Times, O Magazine and Runner’s World. Her story was also told in the inspiring 2012 documentary, Spirit of the Marathon II.
Julie, who has now run 105 marathons, chose the name Marathon Goddess, but is quick to point out that its true meaning is not about her; it’s a name that allows her to encourage others to embrace their passion and let it shine.

Buried In Georgetown: A Brief Look At Cemeteries and Burial Grounds in Georgetown, Washington, D.C.

I was born and grew up in Northern New Jersey. I was a History Major in college for one semester when I realized my first love was mathematics. After earning my MS degree in Mathematics / Computer Science at Stevens Institute of Technology, I moved to Washington, DC in 1968. For 25 years I worked at the CIA in various technology and management positions, and established the Chief Information Officer function. In the early 1990s I moved to the FBI to manage the automation of our nation’s fingerprint & criminal records systems.

After retiring from the FBI in 1995, as a Deputy Assistant Director for Engineering, my wife, Kathy, and I started a consulting practice assisting governments in the acquisition and application of forensic science technology. Our clients included 15 US states; a couple of the largest sheriff’s departments; and numerous US, Canadian, and UK federal agencies. The most interesting work included travel to Baghdad and Kabul for the US Defense Department. We worked with the local police and oversaw the design and installation of automated fingerprint systems in those cities. The best consulting work was serving for several years on the UK Biometrics Assurance Group (UKBAG) a committee chaired by Her Majesty’s Chief Scientist. We met 4 times a year in London.

In late 2016, after loss of my wife, I closed the consultancy and wrote local history books about my neighborhood in Washington, DC. In 2023 I am moving to Providence to start the next phase of my life.

I enjoy walking, reading, traveling, learning new things, and family events.
